The meeting of the three top leaders of major political parties held at Singha Durbar has decided to form a recommendation committee again to select officials for the transitional justice mechanisms.
Following discussions that centered around the appointment of chairpersons and members of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP), Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' agreed that the government would initiate the process, according to Agni Kharel, the Prime Minister's Advisor on Human Rights and Transitional Justice.
"In line with Section 3(3) of the Enforced Disappearances Inquiry, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act, 2014, the Prime Minister consulted with leaders of both parties to advance the process of forming a recommendation committee for appointing chairpersons and members of both commissions," Kharel said, "The process of forming the recommendation committee will proceed as per the agreement."
The appointment of officials for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons is still pending. Even the recommendation (search) committee for this purpose has not been formed yet.
Earlier, the recommendation committee led by former Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra had stepped down from its role, citing its inability to finalize a unanimous list of potential officials.
