The ban imposed on export of some Nepali goods to India has been lifted. The ban was lifted after India renewed Bureau of Indian Standard Certificate of different goods including cement, corrugated sheets and ply wood manufactured in Nepal.

Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Damodar Bhandari, during his India visit held a few months ago discussed with his Indian counterpart, Piyush Goyal, about the matter. Minister Bhandari had taken efforts for facilitation for export of Nepali goods to India and sale and distribution of goods in Indian markets.

An extensive discussion was held on the issue in Nepal-India Commerce Secretary-level meeting held on January 11 and 12. The Indian side had expressed commitment to resolve problems after Nepal strongly raised issue with priority. India has made BIS mandatory on export of goods including cement, corrugated sheets, sanitary pads and footwear.

Export of cement toward India from Nepal was stopped since five months and plywood since a month back after India did not renew BIS and entrepreneurs had exerted pressure to the Government of Nepal about the issue about renew of BIS.

Chairperson of Nepal Plywood Manufacturers Association, Hom Prasad Ghimire, said it would be easier to export goods after receiving BIS. Around one dozens of industries have already renewed BIS.

Thirty-four trucks carrying plywood from Nepal reached Kakdvitta few days ago and stuck in check point in lack of BIS, he added.
