Chief Justice of Nepal Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma, alongside distinguished senior judges from the United Kingdom, Bhutan, Brazil, and Kenya, received a formal welcome at the Supreme Court of India on Friday. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant personally escorted the international delegation into Courtroom No 1, introducing the visiting jurists to the bench and other advocates.
Welcoming the international delegates, Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani described India as a vibrant confluence of diverse traditions and judicial values. Highlighting the richness of the nation's legal heritage, he announced that a dedicated interactive session scheduled for Friday evening would offer deeper insights into Indian jurisprudence.
Echoing these sentiments, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta emphasized that despite the short two-day visit, it offers crucial engagement with India's legal architecture. "India's diversity makes it extraordinary, though two days is a modest timeframe to fully explore such a vast judicial landscape," Mehta remarked.
Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh highlighted the significance of the gathering, noting that it serves as a precursor to the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). Established by the UN General Assembly in 1966, UNCITRAL plays a pivotal role in modernizing and harmonizing international trade law.
To mark the milestone, global events spanning July 2026 to July 2027 will assemble judges, government officials, legal scholars, and arbitration experts worldwide. Chief Justice Sharma arrived in the Indian capital on Thursday following an official invitation from CJI Surya Kant and is scheduled to conclude his visit on July 27.
