Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane, an accused in the cooperative fraud case, has been sent to jail following the High Court order.
Lamichhane was presented at the District Court, Rupandehi on Monday and was sent to jail in Bhairahawa following the court's detention order.
According to DSP Suraj Karki, Information Officer of the District Police Office, Rupandehi, Lamichhane will remain in the prison until the court's next order.
Reversing the district court's order, High Court Tulsipur (Butwal Bench) sentenced Lamichhane to jail in the Supreme Cooperative fraud case.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team deployed from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office and the District Police Range Office arrested Lamichhane from Budhanilkantha.
Previously, the Rupandehi District Court had released Rabi on a bail of Rs 10 million in the Supreme Cooperative fraud case. On January 26, Judge Prahlad Kumar Yogi of the Rupandehi District Court had ordered the release of Rabi on a bail of Rs 10 million.
The government attorney's office had filed a petition in the High Court, arguing that while Chhabilal was sent to jail, Rabi—facing similar charges—was released on bail, and demanded that Rabi also be sent to jail. The High Court issued the order in line with the government attorney's request.
Similarly, Rabi had filed a petition in the High Court requesting a reduction in the bail amount of Rs 10 million and to keep him under general dates. In the Supreme Cooperative case, Rabi, Chhabilal, and GB Rai, along with 42 others, have been named as defendants.
They are accused of embezzling over Rs 550 million from the cooperative. Among them, Rabi, Chhabilal, and GB Rai are specifically accused of embezzling 109 million 936 thousand rupees separately. GB Rai, however, remains at large.
