Durga Prasai, the main commander of the violent protest at Tikune in Kathmandu, has been arrested in Assam, India. Police sources confirm he is being brought back to Nepal via the Kakadbhitta border.

Prasai’s family claims he contacted Assam police for safety, not arrest. Meanwhile, his associates are returning to Nepal.

After Prasai fled to India, police tracked down his location. Though he initially went silent, he recently posted a video on social media, claiming he fled due to safety concerns.

The Tikune protest on March 28 turned violent, resulting in two deaths, arson, and vandalism. Prasai escaped from Kathmandu in a Scorpio (B-A-B 4208), which was later found at B and C Medical College in Jhapa. Police confirmed he sneaked into India via Kakadbhitta.

Before fleeing, Prasai hid in a house in Kathmandu, inciting violence. Supporters vandalized properties while police used tear gas shells. He later left with bodyguards and spiritual leader Pushkar Khatiwada.

Police detained the driver and seized the vehicle. Two officers visited Prasai’s Jhapa-based home during the investigation. Before fleeing, Prasai called RPP leader Dhawal Shamsher and turned off his phone.

RPP leaders Rabindra Mishra and Shamsher also were involved in inciting violence. Police have arrested 70 individuals, including Mishra and Shamsher, for treason, criminal offenses, and organized crime.
