A bus with the registration number Province 1–01–001–Kha 42, heading to Jhapa from Kathmandu met with an accident at Dudhe in Shivashatakshi Municipality–9 on the East-West Highway in Jhapa at 5 am today.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Milan Kumar KC of the Jhapa District Police Office, 22 passengers on the bus were injured in the accident. The injured are currently receiving treatment at Birat City Hospital and B & C Hospital in Birtamod, he informed.
Among the injured, 16 were teachers returning home from the ongoing teachers' protest in Kathmandu. Injured teacher Leela Prasad Bhandari shared that teacher Gopal Khatiwada is in critical condition.
"I was sitting just behind the driver's seat," injured teacher Bhandari said, "The bus had been shaking abnormally for a while. Suddenly, it veered off the road and overturned. I barely survived. When I saw fuel leaking from the bus, despite being injured, I quickly helped rescue the other injured passengers."
DSP KC stated that the bus lost control and crashed, and the driver, Mahendra Kandangwa, has been taken into police custody. KC said an investigation into the case is underway.
