Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba have reached an agreement to appoint the new Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank this week.
The agreement was reached during a two-hour meeting held at the Prime Minister's official residence in Baluwatar on Saturday evening, sources have said.
"Prime Minister Oli and NC President Deuba have agreed to appoint a new Governor within this week," a source told Nepalkhabar, "The new Governor will likely be appointed by next Thursday."
Oli and Deuba had, earlier, agreed to appoint Dr. Gunakar Bhatta as the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank.
For the Governor's appointment, the government had formed a recommendation committee led by Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel, with Bijaya Nath Bhattarai and Bishwa Paudel as members. However, committee member Bijaya Nath Bhattarai has resigned.
According to the source, there is an understanding between the two leaders that Monday's Cabinet meeting will appoint a new member to fill out the vacant position of the recommendation committee and finalize the Governor's appointment by Thursday.
The position of the Governor has been vacant since Maha Prasad Adhikari retired on April 7.
