The Odisha government has stated that it is carrying out investigation into the death of a Nepali student from Birgunj, Nepal who was studying first-year B.Tech Computer Science at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT).
Issuing a press release, the Odisha government stated it was notified about the death of a first-year B.Tech Computer Science student Prisa Sah at 8:10 AM on Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, a police team, accompanied by forensic experts, immediately rushed to the college to investigate the case, the Odisha government said.
"On receipt of the information, senior officers, including the Commissioner of Police and Revenue Divisional Commissioner, rushed to the site to enquire into the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident and take necessary action in the matter. The forensic team is at the spot to collect evidence," reads the press note.
Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Arzu Rana Deuba has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a Nepali student whose body was found in her hostel room of KIIT College yesterday evening.
This is the second incident of its kind in less than three months in the Indian college. Taking to social media platform X, Minister Rana said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated a diplomatic inquiry into the case, through the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi and the high-level officials of the Odisha government.
Extending condolences to the family of the deceased, Minister Rana wrote, "I am deeply stunned by the death of a Nepali student at KIIT College in the Indian State of Odisha. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated an inquiry into the case in coordination with the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi and high-level officials of the Odisha government."
A Nepali undergraduate student was found dead in her hostel room at KIIT College on Thursday evening, marking the second such incident in less than three months.
According to Hindustan Times, the student, who hailed from Birgunj, Nepal, was pursuing computer science. Preliminary investigations suggest suicide, though the exact reasons remain unclear. Police are currently probing the case.
This tragic incident follows the suicide of another 20-year-old Nepali computer science student in February, who took her own life after allegedly being blackmailed by a classmate. The case had sparked outrage when faculty members were accused of making racially insensitive remarks against Nepali students.
