As the efforts to appoint Dr. Gunakar Bhatta as the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank becomes a tough nut to crack, the Nepali Congress has prepared to field economist Dr. Bishwo Poudel as a new governor.

During a meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at Baluwatar on Saturday evening, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba proposed Poudel for the position if Bhatta could not be appointed.

Chief Secretary of Nepali Congress Krishna Prasad Paudel also confirmed this.

“Since Bhatta couldn’t be appointed as governor, the president had to present a new name,” he said. “It is true that President Deuba has now put forward the name of Bishwo Paudel.”

However, Poudel is currently a member of the governor recommendation committee formed by the government. Discussions about his appointment can only proceed after he resigns from the committee, which is coordinated by Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel.

NC has been strongly advocating for Bhatta as the new governor. However, the governor recommendation process has been stalled for a long time because his resignation has not been approved.

According to sources close to NC, Bishwo Paudel is also a competent candidate for the governor’s position based on his qualifications.
