A corruption case has been filed against Nepali Congress lawmaker and former Communications Minister Mohan Basnet in the Special Court over the controversial Teramax scandal. Along with Basnet, 15 others and a company have been accused, with authorities seeking a recovery of Rs 3.21 billion.
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) alleges that Basnet misused his authority by bypassing legal procedures to approve the Teramax system—an international call monitoring and VoIP control mechanism—without proper feasibility studies, cost assessments, or consultations with relevant agencies.
The charges claim that Basnet violated the Nepal Telecommunications Act, 2053, and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059, by unlawfully directing the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) to implement the system, causing significant financial losses to the state.
If convicted, Basnet and other accused could face jail terms, fines, and additional penalties under anti-corruption laws. The case highlights concerns over unauthorized state expenditures and misuse of power in high-profile government projects.
