Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa.
Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has stated that the ruling coalition partners—Nepali Congress and CPN (UML)—have failed to uphold the commitments they made during the government formation.
Addressing the regional conference organized at Banke-2, he stated that the NC-UML government was operating in a reckless manner.
"When NC and UML formed the government, they had signed a seven-point agreement regarding the amendment of the Constitution. We are not fulfilling those promises," he said. "We have become so careless that we have forgotten the main commitment of constitutional amendment. We must immediately work toward amending the Constitution as per the seven-point agreement between NC and UML."
Thapa stated that the current system itself is good, but its vehicles are wrong. "This is the system—the Federal Democratic Republic. This system will endure. We will sustain this system," he added. "There are some flaws in this system, and we should rectify them through the amendment of the constitution."
He also emphasized that the onus to reform and rectify the republican system lies with Nepali Congress.
"NC must take responsibility and speak up. The Constitution issued under the leadership of Sushil Koirala is a new highway for Nepal. We started a new path. On the day we began this highway, all of us were happy," he said. "Once the highway was built, drivers took over the vehicles. Now, the vehicles appear old and worn out. They have not been able to operate the vehicles properly. And those sitting outside are saying—this road itself is bad. NC must tell them—the road is not bad. It is a new road, the one we chose. The problem lies with the vehicles running on this road. We must fix the problems within those vehicles. An old vehicle isn’t necessarily bad, but it must adapt with the times.
Meanwhile, he warned that if we abandon the idea of repairing and maintaining the vehicle and keep searching for a new one, we will waste another 10 years.
