Rainfall forecast across provinces, heavy rain in Koshi and Madhesh

The weather is likely to remain partly to generally cloudy across the country today. Light to moderate rainfall with thunder/lightning is likely in some areas of Koshi Province, Gandaki Province, Lumbini Province, and Sudurpaschim Province, as well as a few places in the remaining provinces, according to the weather bulletin issued at 6 AM today. One or two places in Koshi Province may experience heavy rainfall. Light rain/snowfall is possible in a few high mountainous and Himalayan regions of the country.

Similarly, weather will remain partly to generally cloudy in the hilly regions of Koshi Province, Madhesh Province, Bagmati Province, Gandaki Province, and Lumbini Province, while the remaining regions will have mainly clear to partly cloudy weather tonight. Light to moderate rainfall with thunder/lightning is expected in some areas of Koshi Province, Madhesh Province, and Bagmati Province, a few places in Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces, and one or two places in the remaining hilly regions.

One or two places in Koshi and Madhesh Provinces may also experience heavy rainfall. Light rain/snowfall is likely in a few high hilly and Himalayan areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces, as well as one or two places in other high hilly and Himalayan regions.

Currently, Nepal is under the influence of three types of winds, including the monsoon. According to the Department of Water and Meteorology, Weather Forecasting Division the Meteorological Forecasting Division, western and local winds are affecting the western and central regions, while monsoon winds are influencing most areas of Koshi Province.

Meteorologists define rainfall intensity as follows:

  • Light rainfall: Less than 10 mm within 24 hours
  • Moderate rainfall: 10 to 50 mm within 24 hours
  • Heavy rainfall: 50 to 100 mm within 24 hours
  • Very heavy rainfall: 100 to 200 mm within 24 hours
  • Extremely heavy rainfall: More than 200 mm within 24 hours
