The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against former Prime Minister of Nepal, Madhav Kumar Nepal, making him the highest-ranking official to face such charges in Nepal's history.
The case involves the alleged illegal purchase and sale of land in Kavrepalanchowk district by Patanjali Yogpeeth and Ayurveda Company Nepal. The CIAA claims the company acquired land beyond legal limits at undervalued prices and sold it at higher rates, with Nepal's involvement.
Nepal, chairman of the CPN (Unified Socialist), served as Prime Minister from May 25, 2009 - February 5, 2011. Though he lost elections in two constituencies, he entered the Constituent Assembly via nomination. Currently a suspended MP from Rautahat, Nepal was previously implicated in the Lalita Niwas land scam but got a clean chit due to jurisdictional issues.
The CIAA is now pursuing another case linked to his tenure, marking his second major legal battle. The Supreme Court is also reviewing a petition demanding action against Nepal and another former Prime Minister, Baburam Bhattarai, in the Lalita Niwas case.
