Govt secures Rs 3 trillion foreign aid commitments from 16 donors

The government has received commitments for foreign aid worth Rs nearly 3 trillion rupees for the current fiscal year (2024/25) from bilateral and multilateral donors to fund various projects.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the total commitment stands at Rs 273 billion 46 million 370 thousand, including Rs 57 billion 503 million 150 thousand in grants and Rs 215 billion 543 million 220 thousand in loans.

Of this, Rs 43 billion 511 million 780 thousand comes from bilateral sources, while Rs 229 billion 534 million 590 thousand is from multilateral agencies. Key contributors include China, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Notably, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has pledged Rs. 1 billion 409 million 400 thousand for local infrastructure and Rs. 13 billion for the Rain and Resilience program. The World Bank committed Rs. 49 billion 170 million for regional road improvements, while the Global Environment Facility allocated Rs. 1 billion 208 million 600 thousand for climate change projects. Japan pledged Rs. 960 million for human resource development and scholarships, while Germany offered Rs. 76 million 200 thousand for technical cooperation.

The European Union pledged Rs. 6 billion 500 million for energy and nutrition projects, while IFAD committed Rs. 9 billion 450 million for agricultural development. Switzerland pledged Rs. 1 billion 980 million in grants.

The ADB emerged as the largest donor, committing Rs. 106 billion 710 million in loans and Rs. 8 billion 420 million in grants. China pledged Rs. 5 billion 570 million, while Norway committed Rs. 4 billion 210 million for energy projects. The World Bank also pledged Rs 50 billion 510 million for bridge and road upgrades.

In total, the government secured 33 grant and loan agreements from 16 donors, targeting infrastructure, transport, climate, good governance, and social sectors.

"Foreign aid plays a crucial role in Nepal’s development, supporting key projects across multiple sectors," the Finance Ministry stated.
