The position of senior vice-chairman held by CPN (UML) leader Ishwar Pokharel, who has been openly supporting former president Bidya Bhandari, is set to be abolished.
The UML's central secretariat meeting today is preparing to amend the party statute to remove the position of senior vice-chairman altogether. The secretariat meeting is being held at 1 PM to discuss preparations for the upcoming statute convention scheduled in September.
A UML leader informed that the meeting, chaired by Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli at 1 PM today at the party’s central office in Chyasal, is set to decide on removing the senior vice-chairman position from the party.
"The party is preparing to amend the statute by removing the senior vice-chairman position. This decision will be made in today’s secretariat meeting," the leader familiar with the ongoing discussions about the statute amendment said, "This amended statute, including the new provision, will come into effect once it is endorsed by the upcoming convention."
UML has already decided to hold its second statute convention on September 5, 6, and 7 in Godawari, Lalitpur. Recently, disputes have been escalating within UML regarding the 70-year age limit and the two-year term limit for the chairman.
Today’s secretariat meeting has the agenda to discuss amendments to the statute. The party is preparing to pass the newly amended statute in this meeting.
Once the senior vice-president position is abolished, Pokharel will either have to run for chairman or retire from active politics at the party’s top level.
