Former minister and the leader of Nepali Congress Rajendra Kharel has passed away.
He passed away at the age of 80 at the Frontline Hospital in Baneshwar last night, according to family sources.
He was admitted to the hospital a few days ago after developing health problems including asthma.
Born in Kharelthok, Kavre in 2003 BS, Kharel became active in politics as the secretary of the unit committee of the Nepal Student Union at Shankardev Campus in 2025/026 BS.
He played an active role in the referendum of 2036, the Satyagraha of 2042, the People's Movement of 2046 and the People's Movement of 062/2063 BS. He spent about 9 years in prison several times.
Kharel, who considered BP Koirala, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, Ganeshman Singh and others as role models, became the Minister of State for Education after winning the parliament in 2056 BS and also became the Minister of Women, Children and Social Welfare.
Kharel's body will be kept at the Nepali Congress central office in Sanepa from 9 am to 11 am on Monday for the public to pay their respects.
His last rites will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat at 1 pm today, his family said.
