A no-confidence motion has been registered against Nepali Congress Bagmati Province Parliamentary Party (PP) leader and Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama, who was elected from Nepali Congress.

Twenty-one provincial assembly members from NC itself have registered the no-confidence motion against Lama.

Indra Bahadur Baniya, a member of Nepali Congress Bagmati Province Assembly, who is also a Central Working Committee (CWC) member of NC, has lodged the no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Lama.

NC province assembly member Indra Bahadur Baniya shared that 21 province assembly members of the NC out of 37 registered the no-confidence motion at the party's PP office.

Organizing a news conference on Friday, Baniya said the Lama-led government failed to do any remarkable work in the past one year and the development works were not effective and there were issues within and out of the ruling coalition in the budget of the current fiscal year 2082/083. Baniya is vying for the post of Chief Minister in a political power struggle.

On December 28, 2022, during the parliamentary party election, Lama received 21 votes out of 37 lawmakers to become the PP leader, while Baniya obtained only 16 votes.

However, within a year, the situation has completely reversed. Twenty-one lawmakers have now signed in favor of Baniya.

Baniya's faction claims that party president Sher Bahadur Deuba had brokered a 50/50 agreement—meaning Lama and Baniya would each serve as Chief Minister for one year. According to this agreement, Lama, who became Chief Minister a year ago on July 24, 2024, is supposed to resign. Since he did not step down, the no-confidence motion was registered today, argues the Baniya faction.

In support of Baniya, provincial government ministers—Minister for Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Madhu Kumar Shrestha, Minister for Internal Affairs and Law Suraj Chandra Lamichhane, Minister for Youth and Sports Min Krishna Maharjan, and Minister for Culture and Tourism Bimal Thakuri—have also tendered their resignations.
