Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shekhar Koirala asserted that democracy can only flourish if there is a proper balance among the executive, legislature and judiciary.

Leader Koirala delivered the statement at a programme organized by the Karmayogi Badribikram Thapa Memorial Service Trust on the occasion of 103rd birth anniversary of former administrator Badribikram Thapa here Sunday.

Cautioning that the lack of separation of power among the key organs of the State could endanger democracy, Koirala maintained that decisions made by the Constitutional Council should remain fair. "Those assuming public office in the State apparatus should prioritize national interest over the personal interest," he insisted.

Koirala lauded the legacy of former administrator Thapa, terming the late Thapa as a composed public administrator even in the face of challenging times. He viewed it was difficult to find such administrator who command reverence at the time when country's public administration is at the receiving end of undue political influence.

Similarly, Minister for Labour and Employment Sharat Singh Bhandari said that former administrator Thapa would be recalled for his great sacrifice and struggle towards the society and country.

Also speaking in the programme, senior politician CP Gajurel pointed out the need for highlighting the legacy of those who have contributed to the cause of democracy.

In the programme presided over by Trust Chairperson Prof Dr Suresh Raj Sharma, several personalities such as cultural expert Tejeshwor Babu Gwanga and artisan Urmila Garga reflected on Thapa's contribution and the Trust's role in establishment of democracy in the country and in social service respectively.
