A person has died after being hit by a bullet fired by the police in Saptari. Two police personnel were also injured in the incident in Rajgadh Rural Municipality-2 on Tuesday night.
“The incident occurred at around 10:30 PM on Tuesday,” DSP Jitendra Kumar Basnet of the District Police Office, Saptari, told Nepalkhabar. “When the police, deployed to curb alcohol smuggling, were attacked, they fired in self-defense, resulting in the death of 36-year-old Lalu Yadav, a local resident.”
He informed that Police Inspector Birendra Kumar Yadav and Assistant Head Constable Sikendra Tharu were also injured in the attack by those involved in alcohol smuggling.
DSP Basnet stated that when a crowd of around 60-70 locals gathered and began attacking the police with homemade weapons, five rounds of warning shots were initially fired in the air for self-defense. However, as the police continued to face a barrage of stones and other objects, they resorted to opening fire.
Yadav, who was seriously injured by the police bullet, died while undergoing treatment at Gajendranarayan Singh Hospital in Rajbiraj.
“During the operation, we also seized some cartons of Nepali-brand alcohol that were being smuggled from Nepal to India,” DSP Basnet said.
The incident site is located about 17 km west of the district headquarters, Rajbiraj, near the Nepal-India border area.
