In what we call a rare and shocking case, human bones were found to have been sold at Pashupati Aryaghat, recently.
According to the police, a crematorium worker allegedly sold a piece of bone from a corpse for Rs 500. Ganesh Dhakal, a long-time worker at the site, revealed that a man of Madhesi origin paid him Rs 400 for a small bone fragment from a burning corpse.
Dhakal then instructed a younger assistant to deliver the bone in a camphor container, who received Rs 100 for his role. Dhakal claimed he had no information about the buyer.
Police arrested Dhakal on Friday after relatives of the deceased, Ram Shahi of Banepa-9, Kavrepalanchowk, reported about the theft of mortal remains before the cremation was complete. Dhakal admitted to the crime during interrogation, stating he was lured by the money.
Having worked at Aryaghat since 2055 BS, Dhakal said he initially earned Rs 400 per cremation but now charges Rs 1,500. Police are investigating further and plan to present the accused in court on Monday.
