As many as 25 members of parliament (MPs) have registered amendment proposals on the Nepal Citizenship (Second Amendment) Bill.
The bill, which has already been passed by the House of Representatives, was sent to the Legislation Management Committee of the National Assembly for discussion, where 25 lawmakers from ten different groups have submitted amendment proposals.
It is expected that the amendment proposals registered by the MPs will clarify and rectify ambiguous provisions in the bill.
The Legislation Management Committee has started discussions on the bill from Monday.
The bill includes provisions allowing naturalized Nepali citizenship for individuals born abroad to Nepali mothers, residing in Nepal, who do not hold foreign citizenship or passports, and whose father's identity is unknown, provided they declare as specified.
Similarly, the bill also includes provisions for issuing minor identity cards to minors under 16 years of age, provided at least one of their parents (father or mother) is a Nepali citizen.
