Member of Parliament (MP) Ishwari Neupane has been elected unanimously as the chairperson of State Affairs and Good Governance Committee.
The scheduled time for filing candidacies was Tuesday between the 1 pm and 4 pm. Neupane was elected the chairperson of the State Affairs Committee after no other candidates filed their candidacies within the time stipulated. However, her election as the chairperson is yet to be announced officially.
The post was lying vacant after former chairperson of the parliamentary committee, Ramhari Khatiwada, resigned from the post over the alleged tampering of the cooling-off period provision in the Federal Civil Service Bill.
Khatiwada, the outgoing chairperson of the committee, proposed her as the candidate for the post of the chairperson while her candidacy was seconded by UML MP Krishna Gopal Shrestha.
Neupane, the chairperson of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC), was made to resign from the post to lead the State Affairs Committee.
After Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka tried to reappoint the former chairman Khatiwada, General Secretary duo Gagan Thapa, Bishwa Prakash Sharma, and leaders from other groups had pushed for the name of Dillendra Badu. Deuba did not accept Badu's name and proposed Neupane's name instead. A consensus was reached on her name in the office bearers' meeting held earlier in the day today.
No sooner had leaders reached consensus on her name, than Neupane met Speaker Devraj Ghimire and submitted her resignation as the PHC chair and filed her candidacy for the post of chairperson of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee.
