The Nepal government has clarified that Nepal does not support the Global Security Initiative (GSI) put forward by China.
Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai said this at a press conference organized at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) after the delegation led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli returned home.
While addressing the queries of the media at the press conference, Secretary Rai, who returned along with Prime Minister Oli from the China visit, said that although Nepal supports the Global Development Initiative (GDI) put forward by China, it does not support anything beyond that.
A statement issued by China after the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Oli and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday stated that Nepal has also expressed support for the GSI.
Since the GSI is a platform of a military or security alliance nature, concerns are being expressed from various sectors that it will go against Nepal's non-aligned foreign policy.
Clarifying on the issue, Secretary Rai said, "Among the initiatives put forward by China, Nepal only supports the Global Development Initiative. Nepal has not expressed support for other initiatives. Please be clear on this matter."
Prime Minister Oli, however, did not attend the press conference.
