Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has expressed readiness to form two power commissions -- one to investigate the suppression during the Gen Z uprising and another to combat corruption.
Thapa, who is also the Member of Parliament, made this statement following news reports that Chief Justice Sushila Karki refused to become Prime Minister after leaders of three major parties – Nepali Congress, CPN (UML) and Maoist Center) – refused to form commissions.
Asserting that such news was false, Thapa wrote on social media, "We are firm in our stance of forming two powerful commissions -- one against suppression and vandalism, and the other against corruption. Please do not spread misleading information at least in this sensitive situation."
Essentially, the Gen Z movement, which was protesting against corruption, was brutally suppressed at Baneshwar in Kathmandu on September 8 and other cities, resulting in 19 deaths. The movement turned violent the next day, with vandalism and arson targeting the Parliament building, Singha Durbar, Sheetal Niwas and the Supreme Court. The death toll from the two-day Gen Z movement has now reached 51, with 1,872 injured and 299 still undergoing at various hospitals.
Despite the deaths of 19 youths on the first day, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli did not resign until the second day, when protesters entered houses and began assaulting leaders, forcing him to step down. This led to the process of forming a new government in the country.
On Thursday night, an agreement was reached at Sheetal Niwas to form an interim government led by former Chief Justice Karki during the tripartite meeting between President Ramchandra Paudel and Gen Z talks facilitated by Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel.
