Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Sushila Karki on assuming the post of Prime Minister of the interim government of Nepal.

Addressing Nepal from Manipur, India on Saturday, Modi praised Nepal for upholding democratic values and norms as supreme even in an unstable environment.

"Nepal, which lies in the lap of the Himalayas, is India’s development partner, a close friend. We are connected by a shared history, faith and we are moving forward together," Modi said. "On behalf of 1.4 billion Indians, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Ms Sushila Karki on assuming the post of Prime Minister of interim government of Nepal. I am confident that she will restore peace, stability and pave the way for development and prosperity in Nepal. Ms Sushila’s appointment as the first female Prime Minister of Nepal is an excellent example of women’s empowerment. I praise every citizen of Nepal today who has upheld democratic values and norms as supreme even in such an unstable environment."

He also praised the youth who were involved in the movement. Modi said that he saw them cleaning and painting the streets of Nepal.

"Friends, there is another special thing in the developments that have taken place in Nepal, which people have not paid attention to. For the last two to three days, the youth of Nepal have been seen cleaning and painting the streets of Nepal with a lot of hard work and a sense of duty. I have also seen their pictures on social media. Their positive thinking and initiative are not only inspirational but also a clear sign of Nepal’s revival. I wish Nepal all the best for its bright future."
