The newly appointed ministers, Om Prakash Aryal, Rameshwar Khanal and Kulman Ghising are being sworn in today.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Sunday decided to give the responsibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs as well as the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs to advocate and rights activist Om Prakash Aryal, the Ministry of Finance to former Finance Secretary Rameshwar Khanal, and three ministries - the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Construction, the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, and the Ministry of Urban Development to Kulman Ghising.
She had recommended these names to President Ram Chandra Paudel on Sunday night.
Former Chief Justice Karki became the head of the interim government after the government led by UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli collapsed due to the Gen Z movement.
Three days after the then Oli-led government decided to shut down 26 social media platforms including Facebook, X, and YouTube on the grounds that they were not registered, the Gen Z protested in various cities of the country, including Kathmandu on September 8 and 9.
During the government's crackdown, 17 protesters were killed in Baneshwar, Kathmandu, and two in Sunsari, and hundreds sustained injuries when police opened fire.
The next day, on September 9, the protesters burned down not only the leaders' homes, public institutions, and corporate houses, but also the Parliament Building, Singha Durbar, and the Supreme Court. The irate protests barged into the house of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba and assaulted him and his wife Arzu Rana before setting their house on fire. Oli was forced to step down as Prime Minister.
The Gen Z movement took such a nasty turn that the Nepali Army had to take top leaders, including the Prime Minister, to a safe place.
The interim government has stated that 72 people have lost their lives in the two-day Gen Z uprising.
