China on Wednesday appointed Song Tao as head of the Taiwan Affairs Office of China's State Council.
According to a press statement issued by China's State Council, the veteran communist leader will oversee the country's Taiwan affairs.
In the past, Song served as vice minister of Foreign Affairs of China and Minister of the International Liaison Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Song is a senior CPC leader. He is also an expert on China's South Asian affairs. He remained in close contact with Nepali leaders when he served as the head of CPC's International Liaison Department.
Song also held virtual talks with Nepali leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic, offering his country's support to Nepal deal with the pandemic.
Song had visited Kathmandu in September 2019 ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's historic visit to Nepal. During his visit, the then Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and Communist Party of China established fraternal relations with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
