The government is making preparations to form a judicial commission to investigate the suppression of the Gen-Z movement and the destruction incurred under its name. The cabinet on last Sunday agreed in principle to form such a commission to this effect.
The Council of Ministers is reportedly mulling former Special Court Chairman Gauri Bahadur Karki and former Supreme Court Justice Balaram KC to lead the commission at Baluwatar, according to a source at the Council of Ministers.
However, former Justice Karki himself has suggested that it would be more appropriate to form such a commission under the leadership of a former Supreme Court Justice, such as Balaram KC, Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada, or Ananda Mohan Bhattarai.
Karki is considered a fearless and honest judge who served in the Special Court. He has also ruled on many corruption cases. Therefore, he has sent a message to Baluwatar that it would be more suitable for him to be entrusted with the responsibility of a corruption investigation commission rather than one on the suppression of the movement.
A meeting of the Council of Ministers is scheduled for today.
Gen-Z had protested against the corruption, irregularities and nepotism. The strength of this movement led to the displacement of the government led by KP Sharma Oli and the formation of an interim government led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki.
The Gen-Z groups are piling pressure on the government for a corruption investigation commission. They have also warned on social media that they would take to the streets if the government does not form such a commission.
