Minister for Education, Science and Technology Mahabir Pun has called on Nepalis who dream of a directly elected presidential system to participate in the elections in an organized manner.
Minister Pun has appealed to focus on the upcoming House of Representatives elections to be held on March 5, 2026, as major changes will not be possible unless old leaders are ousted and a government with a large majority of clean young leaders is formed.
Taking to social media, Minister Pun wrote on Friday morning, "Clear call – I call on all Nepalis who dream of a government that provides good governance to all the people by reducing corruption as much as possible, that Nepal becomes economically prosperous, that foreigners are not allowed to interfere, and that directly elects executive president, to immediately start preparing to participate in the elections in an organized manner without any hassle to elect qualified, moral and determined young people’s representatives. Major changes are not possible unless a government with a large majority of clean young leaders is formed.’
Currently, voices are being raised that one of the demands of the Gen Z Movement is that the executive head of government should be directly elected.

However, Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that the constitution needs to be amended to change the form of governance and that constitutional amendment is not within the purview of the current government.
Addressing the nation on Thursday, she said that the constitution can be amended only after the upcoming elections.
Prime Minister Karki said, "Since the issues raised by the Gen Z groups during the movement, including the amendment of Nepal's constitution and governance system, are outside the purview of the current interim government, I would like to urge the Nepali people, including the young generation, who are in favor of a massive overhaul, to participate in the upcoming elections and amend the constitution through the constitutional process."
