Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has presented the schedule for the 15th General Convention of the party at Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting at Sanepa. Thapa submitted a proposal to hold the General Convention from December 31 to January 3.
There is an ongoing dispute within Nepali Congress over whether to hold the General Convention before or after the elections scheduled for March 5, next year.
Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba and the establishment faction, however, insist that the convention should only be held in April/May, next year. Thapa presented his self-prepared schedule amidst this controversy.
Furthermore, General Convention representatives who support Gagan Thapa have already submitted signatures demanding a Special General Convention. Signatures from 54 percent of the General Convention representatives were submitted to the Acting Party President, Purna Bahadur Khadka.
A gathering organized by the Special General Convention proponents took place at New Baneshwar in Kathmandu. This gathering piled pressure on the party to immediately announce a schedule for a Special General Convention if they cannot manage to hold the regular general convention on time.
