Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Central
Working Committee (CWC) Member Arzu Rana Deuba are scheduled to return home tonight.
Party Spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat confirmed that the Deuba couple will be returning home this evening. "They are returning home this evening," Mahat told Nepalkhabar.
According to airport sources, the Deuba couple is scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu at 9:30 pm. They had left for Singapore on October 27 via the flight of Singapore Airlines.
The Deuba couple had been attacked by protestors at their own residence in Budhanilkantha during the Gen Z uprising on September 8-9.
Injuries, treatment, and party convention
President Deuba, who was seriously injured in the attack, sustained a wound on the back of his head. Nepali Congress leaders had reported that twelve stitches were required for the injury.
Deuba had flown to Singapore for treatment, delegating the role of Acting President to Party Vice-President Purna Bahadur Khadka. Notably, they did not even use the VIP lounge while departing for Singapore.
The current interim government had previously decided to seize the passports of Deuba and others and require them to obtain permission before leaving the Kathmandu Valley. However, this restriction was lifted for Deuba after it was known he was traveling abroad for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, the party's CWC meeting, which began on October 14, has been ongoing for last one month. Although everyone except Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka has expressed their views, the establishment group is waiting for Deuba to return before making any decisions.
There is currently no consensus within the party on whether to hold a Special General Convention or a Regular General Convention. General Secretary Gagan Thapa has stated that a regular convention is no longer possible and has proposed the December 13 for a Special General Convention.
