Deputy Speaker Babita Kumari Raut has called a meeting of the Provincial Assembly of Madhesh Province today to move forward with the impeachment motion against Madhesh Speaker Ram Chandra Mandal.
Parties other than UML had registered an impeachment motion against Speaker Mandal at the Provincial Assembly Secretariat on November 12, alleging that he had not conducted himself in a manner befitting his office.
Deputy Speaker Raut has called a meeting of the Provincial Assembly for 1 pm on Wednesday to move forward with the motion.
Raut informed that a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee will be held at 10:30 am before the Provincial Assembly meeting.
“Today’s meeting will discuss whether to file an impeachment motion against Speaker Mandal,” Raut told Nepalkhabar. “I have called all the MPs and Speaker Ram Chandra Mandal about the meeting. The Speaker and the lawmakers will have their say."
Speaker Mandal, who is currently in Kathmandu, said that he will not attend today’s meeting.
"The Deputy Speaker does not have the authority to call a meeting of the Provincial Assembly. The impeachment filed against me is also not legal,’ Speaker Mandal told Nepalkhabar, ‘Everything should be according to the rules and regulations."
Mandal was elected the Speaker representing UML, while Raut was elected from Janamat Party.
There has been a controversy since UML leader Saroj Yadav was appointed Chief Minister at a hotel in Bardibas on November 9, as the largest party in Madhesh Province.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the current Chief Minister Saroj Yadav not to take any decisions that will have long-term consequences.
