The District Administration Office (DAO), Bara has imposed a curfew around the Simara Airport area, yet again. The administration stated that the curfew was issued to prevent further loss of life and property after Gen Z protesters continued their demonstration today, demanding action against those who assaulted them on Wednesday.
The curfew, issued by Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, is in effect from 1 pm to 8 pm today. During this time, no individual is allowed to travel, gather, hold rallies, or protest within the designated area.
The restricted zone covers 500 meters on either side of the highway from Pathalaiya Chowk in South on the Birgunj-Pathalaiya road section to Jitpur Lalka bridge, as well as 500 meters around Simara Airport.
Gen Z members are currently protesting at Simara Chowk, and a clash between demonstrators and police occurred earlier today when police used force to clear the road that the protesters had blocked.
The initial protests on Wednesday were organized by Gen Z to oppose the arrival of CPN (UML) General Secretary Shankar Pokharel and Politburo Member Mahesh Basnet for a party program. The protests and the vandalism of the airport gate successfully prevented both leaders from traveling to Simara from Kathmandu.
Following this, local UML workers reportedly assaulted the Gen Z demonstrators.
In connection with the assault, police have arrested two ward chairpersons from the Jitpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City, who were elected from UML.
The Gen Z had threatened further agitation if the perpetrators were not arrested, leading to their demonstrations this morning and the subsequent issuance of the curfew.
