Leaders advocating for the Special General Convention of Nepali Congress are organizing a special gathering in Kathmandu today.
According to leader Gururaj Ghimire, the event has been scheduled to take place at the City Hall in Bhrikutimandap after 1 pm.
Another leader, Manojmani Acharya, said that hundreds of leaders and cadres from outside the Kathmandu Valley will also attend the gathering.
Following the Gen Z movement, party leaders and cadres have been demanding a massive overhaul within the party, insisting that a general convention be held before the elections. As the possibility of holding a regular general convention is getting slimmer, they put forward the demand for a special general convention.
To back their demand, they submitted signatures from 54 percent of the general convention representatives nationwide to the party’s acting president, Purna Bahadur Khadka, on October 13.
According to the party statute, if 40 percent of the general convention representatives put forward such a request, a special general convention must be called within three months.
In line with this provision, the Nepali Congress is legally required to hold either a regular or special general convention by January 12.
Leader Yubaraj Pandey, who is involved in organizing the event, said the special gathering was convened to pressure the central working committee (CWC), which has still not decided on holding the general convention despite a majority of representatives calling for it.
He added that if tomorrow’s CWC meeting fails to make a decision on the convention, those demanding the special general convention will themselves announce it through the gathering.
