The Gagan-Shekhar faction of Nepali Congress (NC) advocating for a Special General Convention has stated that there is no alternative to holding the special convention before the upcoming elections.

Addressing a press conference today, the leaders associated with the Gagan-Shekhar faction stated that the inability to make a decision for the past one and a half months—while searching for a leadership capable of going into the elections after undertaking structural reforms within the party—is concerning.

"No one is above the statute. We need a leadership that will boost the morale of party leaders and cadres before the election. We have demanded the convention because the party needs to go into the elections only after structural reforms," said leader Devraj Chalisey. "The General Convention appears to be heading towards not being completed on time. We are talking about going into the elections with a strong and reformed Congress by holding a special convention on time and adopting policies that meet public expectations. [The decision] has been stalled for one and a half months."

The NC Central Working Committee meeting, which started on October 15 (Nepali date: Ashoj 28), has been extended due to the inability to decide whether to hold a Special or a Regular General Convention. Chalisey also stressed that focus should be placed on how to go into the election with a leadership that is capable of making timely decisions.

"How can we go to the elections with a leadership that cannot make a decision, even while acknowledging the necessity of a Special General Convention? We must be serious about this," he said. "A leadership that cannot make a decision that could have been made in two days, even after a month and a half, is not a capable leadership. This is why the need for a special convention is being felt. Let a Special General Convention be called to discuss the issue of the signatories."

He further stated that if a regular general convention is held within the timeframe of the special convention, their petition will automatically become inactive; otherwise, it will remain active.
