An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale has struck Sudurpaschim Province, sending people outdoors.

According to the Seismological Center, Surkhet, the tremor was recorded at 12:9 pm with its epicenter around Saipal in Bajhang district.

The tremors were also felt in the adjoining districts including Humla, Doti, Darchula, Bajura, Achham, the locals have said.

However, the casualties caused by the earthquake have not been reported until the posting of this news.

Following the earthquake, the Bajura district administration has urged the locals to remain cautious from the natural disasters.

Nepal lies in a fault zone as the Indian plate is constantly pushing against the Eurasian (Tibetan) plate, resulting in seismic activities in the Himalayan country, said Geographer Ganesh Kumar Jimee.

Jimee further said Nepal lies between the two tectonic plates -- Indian plate and the Eurasian Plate -- and their constant push against each other is creating energy. When the energy gets accumulated and strained, it releases in the form of seismic waves.
