CPN (UML) General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has stated that the simultaneous departure of ambassadors from the two major global powers—China and the United States—indicates that Nepal’s geopolitics is in a highly sensitive state.
The respective governments of Chinese Ambassador Chen Song and American Ambassador Dean R Thompson have recalled them from their posts in Nepal.
Commenting on the matter via social media, General Secretary Pokharel said, "The plan for the simultaneous return of ambassadors from major power nations suggests that Nepal's geopolitics is in an extremely sensitive phase."
Chinese Ambassador Chen to Nepal, who arrived in 2023, also has already held farewell meetings with President Ram Chandra Paudel. He has already held a farewell meeting with Prime Minister Sushila Karki and President Ramchandra Paudel.
He is scheduled to depart for Beijing today following his recall and subsequent promotion to Director General.
Similarly, the State Department has reportedly informed chiefs of mission that their tenures will end in January. However, the US has yet to officially communicate the transition to the Nepali government.
The departure of these high-profile diplomats comes at a sensitive time for Nepal, which is currently navigating a dramatic political transition.
