Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Thapa has issued a stern warning to the party leadership, stating that the party must explore "alternative options" if the regular General Convention is not held on the scheduled date.
Speaking to journalists following a central work execution committee (CWEC) meeting on Wednesday, Thapa accused the faction led by President Sher Bahadur Deuba of stalling the convention process. He emphasized that any attempt to delay the internal democratic process would be met with firm resistance.
"Deception will not be acceptable. Other alternative paths are open, and we will be forced to take them if necessary," Thapa told reporters.
Thapa clarified that the "alternative path" involves calling for a Special General Convention to elect new leadership before the party heads into the next general elections. He argued that the party cannot and should not face voters without first revitalizing its leadership through a formal convention.
The warning comes amidst ongoing disputes regarding active membership distribution in several districts, which recently led to a nine-day extension of the membership deadline. This delay has pressured the party to revise its existing convention schedule.
During Wednesday's meeting, Thapa proposed a revised timetable that sets Ward Conventions for January 5 and Regional Conventions for January 7. Despite these adjustments, he remains adamant that the final dates for the central convention must remain unchanged.
"Even after the schedule revision, the General Convention must happen at the originally appointed time. The dates should not and cannot be moved," Thapa asserted.
