General Secretaries of Nepali Congress (NC), Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, have announced the postponement of the 15th General Convention and called for a Special Convention.
The General Convention was originally scheduled to take place from January 10 to 12.
In a joint statement issued Thursday evening, General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma announced that the regular convention could not proceed as planned due to a failure to meet the necessary preparatory milestones.
Shift toward Special Convention
The General Secretaries clarified that the timeline set during the December 1 Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting is no longer viable and has been rendered ineffective.
They cited a lack of momentum in completing prerequisite tasks as the primary reason for the "confusion and uncertainty" that led to the postponement.
With the regular convention off the table, Thapa and Sharma are now pushing for a Special General Convention as the only viable alternative.
"The primary option to address the demand for a Special Convention—signed by 54% of convention delegates and registered at the central office—was to hold the regular convention on time," the statement reads. "Since the regular convention cannot happen as scheduled, the option of a Special Convention has come to the forefront once again."
The duo emphasized their commitment to seeking a unanimous decision within the party to move forward with the Special Convention, citing Article 17 (2) of the party statute.
Status of active membership
Despite the postponement of the main event, the General Secretaries have instructed all subordinate committees to continue the distribution and entry of new active memberships.
The statement provided a progress report on party membership. According to the report, approximately 579,395 active memberships have been renewed so far.
Total renewals are expected to exceed 600,000 once processes in Khotang, Bara, Kanchanpur, and Kailali districts are finalized.
Currently, 195,737 new active members have been entered into the system, with data still arriving from other districts and international liaison committees.
The General Secretaries maintained that the postponement of the convention schedule should not hinder the ongoing administrative task of updating the party's membership database.
