After Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, the General Secretaries of Nepali Congress, proposed a special general convention as an alternative to postpone the regular one, President Sher Bahadur Deuba held discussions with Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka and leader Ramesh Lekhak.
On Thursday evening, Deuba summoned Khadka and Lekhak to his residence in Maharajgunj to discuss the General Secretaries' move. Ramesh Lekhak, who participated in the meeting, stated that they have taken the General Secretaries' step seriously and have intensified internal consultations.
President Deuba expressed his view that the two General Secretaries were trying to evade their responsibilities and blame him for the failure to hold the regular general convention.
"A special general convention should not be held under any circumstances; it will cause a split in the party. I have always said to hold the regular convention, and the dates were set accordingly. Despite our efforts, it couldn't happen. How am I to blame if the regular convention didn't take place?" Deuba questioned.
President Deuba has called a meeting of the party's top-notch leaders tomorrow morning to discuss the activities of Thapa and Sharma regarding the special general convention.
NC spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat told Nepalkhabar that the General Secretaries' actions would be scrutinized. "The regular convention did not happen because the General Secretaries, who were responsible for finalizing the active membership, did not do their jobs. Once the date for the regular convention has been fixed, why a special one? Their activities will be evaluated in the meeting called by the President," Mahat said.
