Internal conflict within the Nepali Congress has escalated following a joint proposal by General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma to postpone the regular General Convention in favor of a Special General Convention.
The announcement, made via a joint statement on Thursday, has triggered a wave of high-level meetings and concerns of a potential party split.
Deuba steps back into the fray
Despite having previously moved away from an active executive role, Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba has intensified consultations with top leaders to counter the move. Deuba reportedly fears that a Special Convention at this juncture could lead to a formal division within the party.
Deuba held urgent talks with Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka and leader Ramesh Lekhak on Thursday evening.
A planned meeting between Deuba and the two General Secretaries failed to take place after Thapa and Sharma traveled to Dhulikhel to draft the political report for the proposed convention.
Establishment side mobilizes
In response to the growing tension, the establishment faction loyal to Deuba is coordinating its strategy ahead of the official party meetings.
Pro-Deuba leaders from the Central Work Execution Committee are scheduled to meet today at 12:00 pm at Siddharth Foodland, Sanepa.
The formal meeting of the Central Work Execution Committee is set for 3:00 pm today at the party headquarters in Sanepa to address the crisis.
The outcome of these meetings is expected to determine whether the party moves toward reconciliation or faces a deeper leadership standoff.
