In a bid to contain a deepening internal crisis, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has summoned an emergency meeting of the party’s Central Working Executive Committee (CWEC) for tomorrow. The move comes as the party teeters on the edge of a formal split following a bold challenge from the grassroots leadership.
The internal conflict reached the verge of conflict after the two General Secretaries, Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, unilaterally announced a 'Special Convention' scheduled for January 11 and 12.
The establishment faction, led by Deuba, has condemned this move as unconstitutional and a "rebellious act" that violates the party's formal statutes. The announcement has effectively created two parallel power centers within the country's largest democratic party, sparking widespread fears of an imminent party split.
Seeking a 'middle path'
Sensing that the growing polarization could lead to an irreparable breakdown, President Deuba called for the CWEC meeting to explore a "middle-ground" solution.
The establishment camp is expected to pressure the General Secretaries to withdraw their call for the Special Convention.
On the other hand, the general secretaries is reportedly preparing to double down, using the meeting to further push their agenda for a complete leadership overhaul.
As both sides harden their positions, the outcome of tomorrow's meeting is seen as a "do or die" moment for the unity of Nepali Congress.
