Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has vehemently stated that a Special General Convention holds the supreme authority to change the party's leadership, policies, and statutes.
Addressing the inaugural session of the Special General Convention at Bhrikuti Mandap on Sunday, Thapa emphasized that the General Convention is the most powerful body within the party hierarchy. "The Nepali Congress statute is clear—nothing is greater than the General Convention," Thapa stated. "It has the power to not only elect leaders but to change them as well."
He further noted that the assembly’s mandate extends beyond personnel, possessing the legal weight to overhaul party policies and statutory frameworks.
Thapa clarified that because this Special Convention was organized by representatives rather than the Central Working Committee, the final agenda would be shaped by the delegates themselves on the floor.
"I do not know exactly where this will conclude," Thapa admitted. "You (representatives) have called for a change in both policy and leadership. This was not my personal demand, but yours. Whatever this House decides will be acceptable to me."
The General Secretary's remarks come at a time when the internal debate is ongoing within the country's largest party regarding its future political course and leadership structure.
