Gagan Thapa, the General Secretary of Nepali Congress (NC), has officially filed his candidacy for the post of party President during the party's ongoing Special General Convention.
Thapa registered his nomination at Bhrikuti Mandap on Wednesday morning, the convention venue, signaling a significant challenge to the party's incumbent leadership.
The move comes immediately after a high-level meeting between Thapa and the incumbent President, Sher Bahadur Deuba. Deuba had summoned both General Secretaries, Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, to his residence in Maharajgunj this morning in an eleventh-hour attempt to reach a consensus as the convention moved toward the leadership election phase.
Despite an hour-long discussion, the talks reportedly ended without an agreement. Sources indicate that the General Secretaries demanded a leadership handover. Deuba was not prepared to step down from the presidency at this time.
Following the stalemate at Maharajgunj, Thapa proceeded directly to Bhrikuti Mandap to formalize his bid for the top post. The Special General Convention continues as delegates prepare to cast their votes for the new executive committee.
