Five people died and three others sustained critical injuries in a truck accident that occurred on the Postal Highway in Bhokraha Narsingh Rural Municipality, Sunsari on Thursday morning.
The ill-fated truck, which was transporting marble from Biratnagar to Rajbiraj, lost control and met with an accident. According to District Police Office Sunsari, there were nine people on board the truck at the time of the crash.
Victims identified
All five deceased were residents of Barju 1, Sunsari. Superintendent of Police (SP) Chandra Khadka identified the victims as Birendra Gurung, 32, Brahmadev Gurung, 55, Tek Bahadur Gurung, 50, Nisu Gurung, 28, and 55-year-old Chandra Bahadur Gurung, the police said.
According to police reports, the five victims in the back were crushed by the shifting load of marble during the accident, leading to their immediate deaths.
The three individuals who were seated in the cabin sustained injuries. The driver of the truck fled the scene immediately following the accident. Local authorities have launched a search operation to apprehend the driver and are investigating the exact cause of the crash.
