Nepali Congress (NC) has officially become the largest party in the National Assembly (NA), the upper house of the Federal Parliament, in the elections held today.
Already holding the status of the largest party in the recently dissolved House of Representatives, NC secured its dominance in the upper house by winning all 9 seats it contested.
The party had contested the election through a strategic alliance with CPN (UML) and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), claiming half of the 18 vacant seats up for grabs.
Shift in power dynamics
With today's election results, Nepali Congress emerged as the largest party with 25 seats followed by NCP with 18 while UML became third with 11 seats. Rastriya Janamorcha ha one seat. Earlier, NC had 16 seats. With the retirement of nine of its members today, NCP has slipped to the second position with 18 seats.
In the 59-member National Assembly, 56 members are elected through an electoral college, while the remaining 3 members are nominated by the President on the recommendation of the government.
The National Assembly is a permanent house that operates on a cyclic system. Members serve a six-year term, with one-third of the members' terms expiring every two years to ensure continuity in the legislative process.
