In a bid to tighten immigration policies, the United States government has implemented new restrictions on social benefits for foreign nationals. These measures directly impact Nepali citizens currently residing in the US, who may now face disqualification from various state-funded subsidies.
According to the Embassy of Nepal in Washington DC, the new regulations target non-citizens accessing public resources. The embassy warned that any violation of these rules—including the unauthorized receipt of benefits—could lead to the immediate revocation of visas and Green Cards.
Key restrictions on public benefits
The US government has clarified that foreign nationals, including Nepalis, are no longer eligible for several programs originally designed for American citizens. The restricted services include subsidized healthcare, public housing, social security and general welfare programs and educational aid (federal grants, financial aid, or government-sponsored scholarships).
Furthermore, the embassy noted that the US has temporarily suspended the issuance of certain immigrant visas, a move expected to create hurdles for those seeking long-term employment or residency.
Embassy urges to comply with new federal guidelines
The Nepali Embassy issued a public notice urging the community to remain vigilant and comply with the new federal guidelines. The statement emphasized that providing false information to obtain benefits is a serious offense.
"We have received information that if foreign nationals—whether they are for study, tourism, or employment—are found to have taken government benefits illegally or by submitting false details, their visa or Green Card status will be directly affected and subject to cancellation," the embassy statement stated.
Data from 2024 suggested a high number of Nepali arrivals were accessing public subsidies, prompting the US authorities to tighten policy enforcement specifically regarding the Nepali diaspora.
Misuse of B1/B2 visas
The embassy specifically addressed those traveling on B1 (Business) and B2 (Tourism) visas. Visitors are strictly prohibited from working or relying on government assistance during their stay.
Officials expressed concern that the trend of seeking benefits through misinformation could damage Nepal's diplomatic standing and lead to even harsher visa policies for all Nepali citizens in the future.
As the US continues to overhaul its immigration framework, Nepali citizens already in the country or planning to travel are advised to seek legal counsel and ensure strict adherence to their visa conditions to avoid deportation or permanent bars on reentry.
