Nepali students Lhakpa Yanji and Rajiv die in Canada car accident

Lhakpa Yanji Sherpa from Bhojpur had travelled to Canada to pursue her higher studies. She passed away alongside Rajiv Shrestah of Kaski in a car accident in Ontario, central Canada on June 11, 2026.

While Lakpa was a nursing student, Rajiv was studying IT.

According to the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Canada, 22-year-old Lakpa had recently graduated from the nursing program at Fleming College. Rajiv had studied IT at Mohawk College in Toronto.

Lhakpa had a convocation ceremony at Fleming College on June 9 and 10. They were returning home after attending the convocation ceremony when the accident occurred. The car they were riding in caught fire after the accident.

Quoting Ontario Provincial Police, local media, nepaltouch.com reported that the vehicle caught fire after the accident. They died on the spot.

According to Jagan Sapkota, president of NRNA Canada, the bodies of both students have been kept at a hospital in Toronto. At the request of the parents, the process has been initiated to repatriate the girl's body to Nepal. It is not yet clear where the young man will be cremated.
