Two youths from Khotang have died in an explosion at a coal mine in Meghalaya, India. Four others sustained serious injuries in the incident.
Two brothers from the same house, residents of Barahapokhari Rural Municipality, died on the spot in the explosion.
The deceased have been identified as Purna Bahadur Khapangi Magar, 27, and Surendra Khapangi Magar, 24, of Salghari Bhanjyang, Barahapokhari Rural Municipality-1.
The explosion took place at a coal mine operating in Umsanghat, Meghalaya, on Thursday.
Bam Bahadur Khapangi Magar, Karna Bahadur Khapangi Magar, Nar Bahadur Khapangi Magar, of Bhanjyang, Barahapokhari, and Lalit Bahadur Magar of Udayapur Sawane were injured in the explosion.
Out of the seven-member team working in the coal mine in Meghalaya, only Tarabal Magar of Balampa, Barahapokhari, is safe. Tarabal informed about the incident over the phone after the explosion.
The condition of the four injured in the accident is critical, Tarabal has informed.
“I have been waiting for the bodies of Purna Bahadur and Surendra after they died in the accident. I am in trouble because there is no one I know,” he said over the phone, “The injured have been rescued and taken to the hospital. Their condition is also critical. The concerned authorities should pay attention to this.”
The deceased and injured in the accident had left their homes for Meghalaya on December 18 for employment.
According to Indian media, the number of people who lost their lives in the explosion has reached 18. Detailed information about the incident is yet to come.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed grief over the incident in the coal mine in Meghalaya.
He has announced a compensation of Rs 200,000 each to the families of the deceased. Prime Minister Modi has also said that Rs 50,000 will be provided for the treatment of the injured.
