The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has expressed serious concerns over the excessive use of lead contents in the cosmetics and oral hygiene products, including tooth paste.
The NMA has urged the government to timely enforce strict measures to control the quality of such products stating theat they are very harmful to the human health.
A recent report published by the Center for Public Health and Environmental Development (CEPHED) found the amount of lead in such products beyond the limit set by the international standards. Issuing a press note on Friday, the NMA warned that the finding of excessive lead content in 31 percent of samplings examined is a serious issue.
According to the press note, 45 percent of lead was found in toothpaste, and the food products manufactured for children.
Lead exposure hinders children’s intellectual growth and creates learning difficulties. Furthermore, it can cause lasting damage to their vision, hearing, and neurological systems, said the NMA,
